Police at Dareton are trying to piece together an incident which began as an attempted early morning robbery on Tuesday.

Police said a Dareton resident awoke around 5am when he heard a vehicle enter his driveway.

The occupant of the house went outside to investigate and found a silver four wheel drive vehicle parked nearby.

As he returned along his driveway he met three males described as being of aboriginal appearance,  wearing dark clothing and variously armed with a knife, a screwdriver and walking stick.

The victim has struck one of the assailants with a wooden pole across the head in the struggle, potentially causing a serious injury.

Some of the males have entered the home briefly before all fled in the four wheel drive.

Police attended and established a crime scene, with a number of inquiries being conducted.
