A teenage girl has been seriously injured after a skiing incident in the Murray River near Trentham Cliffs on Saturday afternoon.

The 15-year-old girl was learning to water ski behind a boat on the Murray River at about 5pm when the rope has become entangled around her arm causing her to fall into the water.

The skier, sustained a serious arm injury and was taken to a nearby winery where medical assistance was sought, before being conveyed to Mildura Base Hospital in a stable condition.  It's believed her arm was severed in the accident

 The young girl, who was holidaying here with her parents for the long weekend, was later airlifted by Air Ambulance to Melbourne for further treatment.

Officers from Barrier Police District attended the scene of the incident and have commenced inquiries.

The ski boat, skis and tow rope have been seized for forensic examination.

Police said that the driver of the boat, a 43-year-old man, stopped and assisted the skier who was pulled from the water.
