The funeral service for the late Sunraysia businessman Frank Virgona will be held on Thursday April 19 as a full mass at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mildura at 1.30pm, a week after his death.

Mr Virgona, who operated the Virgona’s Ice works and Ice Cream Factory (located behind the former McEwan’s building - now Rivers) in Madden Avenue, died overnight Wednesday at the age of 91.

Mr Virgona, who never married, was well known in the community as a businessman and for his entertainment of children.

He was one of the first local identities to feature on Sunraysia Television when it came to Mildura in 1965.

As a ventriloquist Mr Virgona and his doll Freddie (Frank and Freddie) appeared regularly on the STV Channel 8 Children’s television show the Paddlewheelers.

Mr Virgona was in demand for parties and special events for most of his entertainment life.

At the age of 76 he was in the cast of the Red Cliffs Musical Society production of the show “Annie”.

In 2015 he donated his doll “Freddie” to the Mildura and District Historical Society.

His late brother Bob Virgona was active in the promotion of junior football in Sunraysia and the Virgona Medal for the best and fairest award in Under 16 football is named after him.

The late Mr Frank Virgona was also a member of Rotary and had planned to attend on the day of his death. He passed away on April 12.
