A 17 year old Mildura harness pony driver has been awarded the 2017 Victorian Harness Racing Association Pony Trots Scholarship for the year 2017.

 The scholarship is a joint initiative of Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) and the Harness Racing Training Centre (HRTC) and aims to encourage young people involved in Pony Trots to consider a career as  a harness race driver.

This year’s winner is Chelsea Prothero, the daughter of Mildura Harness Racing Club Committee member Andrew Prothero and Pony Trots local organiser Sharon Prothero.

The Mildura Senior College student has in her Pony Trot career won two Victoria Cups, along with the State Championship consolation, plus Pony Cups at Swan Hill and Maryborough, along with being named Mildura Pony Trot driver of the year last racing season.

 As the scholarship winner Ms Prothero receives reimbursement of the Cost of HRV C Grade Drivers Licence (valued at $405) when she applies, enrolment at an accredited training course and a $1000 grant to purchase driver and/or horse gear and 12 months formal mentoring by a HRV A grade Driver

The scholarship provides basically a certificate 3 stable hand accreditation leading towards her being able to drive in registered HRV events as a junior driving.
