The Sunraysia Football Netball League will celebrate the season's Best & Fairest in all senior football & netball grades this Wednesday at the McLeod Medal to be held at the Mildura Workingman's Club.
Senior Grade vote counts will be held for the prestigious McLeod Medal for the senior footballers and the Holcroft Medal for the Reserves. Netball vote counts and presentations will be held in A, B and C Grades and for C Reserve.
Awards will also be presented on the night for the Coaches and Umpires of the Year.
The time-honoured McLeod Medal Best & Fairest award was struck in memory of the late Gregor Drummond McLeod who died while serving his country in 1942. Gregor and his brother Colin Snr both played with Mildura Football Club before the 1939 - 1945 war. The award was first presented in 1946 for the best & Fairest senior footballer in the league.
The 2017 winner of the award was Josh Martin from the Mildura Football Netball Club
The Holcroft Medal has been awarded since 1971 and was struck in honour of the late Mr Tom Holcroft who was a longtime servant to local football, including time as President of the Irymple Football Club. The award is given to the Best & Fairest player in the Reserves Grade
The 2017 joint winners of the Award were Marc Doherty of Imperials and Nathan Lawson from the Wentworth District Football Netball Club
In the Senior Netball Grades Awards for the Best & Fairest are in A Grade, the Jackie Horkings Medal which was struck to acknowledge the services to football netball of Jackie Horkings who was one of the driving forces in the commencement of the football netball competition that flourishes today.
In B Grade, the Walder/Hyder Medal is awarded to the Grades Best & Fairest. The medal is in honour of long-time former Secretary Sharon Walder's contribution to netball.
In C Grade, the Hickey Medal is awarded to the Grades Best & Fairest with the medal acknowledging the work of Lynne Hickey, who with Jackie Horkings had the foresight and imagination to get the initial netball competition off the ground.
There is also a Best & Fairest Medal for the C Grade Reserve grade.
The night is held at the Workingman's Club on Wednesday 6th Sept at 6.30pm.
