Jason Doyle extended his lead in the Australian Solo Championships after a second round win at Mildura while local rider Justin Sedgmen has moved into second spot.
Sedgmen, who had three solid heat wins plus a second and a third chased home Australia’s two Grand Prix riders Doyle and Chris Holder to finish third overall at Mildura.
Doyle won four heats, but had a fall in his other race but re-mounted and gave chase, which gave him an additional point as Queenslander Tyson Nelson crashed in the second last lap to allow Doyle to be third.
Tyson Nelson of Queensland won an absorbing B Final to take a place in the A Final and finished 4th.
Apart from the finals the ride of the night was in heat 13 when Jack Holder was third into the last bend but unwound a breathtaking burst around the outside to beat his brother Chris Holder right at the chequered flag.
Doyle picked the inside start position in the final with Sedgmen deciding to take the second pole position.
“I thought about the outside draw but there was nothing really out there and I didn’t want to have Chris Holder in a draw inside of me,” Sedgmen said.
“I am second overall at present and that’s a great place to be,” he said.
For the first time Chris Holder had something nice to say about the Mildura track.
“I hated coming to the old track,” Holder publicly admitted over the public address system at the end of the night. “But this new track is awesome – everyone had a chance on this circuit – it was terrific.”
Doyle said he was happy to have a break over the other contenders at the halfway mark of the Championship series.
“But there’s still two meetings to go,” Doyle said. “I had Chris Holder chasing my tail for the whole series and he got up in the last meeting to take the title.”
Doyle said that his career had really come together in recent years after a shoulder reconstruction.
Becoming a Grand Prix circuit rider is a dream come true and this year I will set myself a target of a top eight finish.”
“It will be terrific to ride in the Melbourne Grand Prix in October and I hope the speedway supporters get right behind the Australian contingent Chris, Troy Batchelor and myself.”
The third round of the titles is at Undera on Wednesday night with the final night of racing this Saturday at the Kurri Kurri track near Newcastle.
