When it comes to matching food with wine, celebrity cook Stefano de Pieri has taken it one step further by launching his own award-winning range of wines, made specifically to be enjoyed with good food.

“My approach to making wine is similar to cooking – it’s all about finding the best ingredients,” Mr de Pieri said.

We seek small, delicate parcels of fruit to make balanced and exotic wines,” he explains.

The Mildura chef runs the world-famous Stefano’s restaurant in Mildura, where he serves flavoursome Italian-inspired food along with his own range of wine.

“The flavours of my wines are vibrant and fresh, their taste leaning more towards savoury rather than fruity and sweet. We have aimed for a pleasant acidity to make the wines balanced, so they can be matched with a range of food,” he says.

Stefano di Piero, , who has studied wine in his motherland Italy, is passionate about using Italian grape varietals grown in Australia such as Sangiovese and Vermentino, when making his range.

“My wines are created to complement food and encourage conversation at the table – in true Italian style,” he added.

Stefano de Pieri was born in Treviso, near Venice. He migrated to Australia in 1974. He graduated Melbourne University in Politics and Italian Studies.

He  became actively involved in many community causes and  edited an Italian fortnightly newspaper called “Nuovo Paese” through which he came into contact with many political and cultural identities.

Then he also  dabbled with food – always his passion – in the early 1980s, training for a little while in a professional environment, but finally chose a job in the Victorian Public Service.

Mr de Piero then became a private secretary to Minister Peter Spyker and then an advisor to a number of Ethnic Affairs Ministers.

He married Donata Carrazza in 1991 and settled in Mildura at the same time.and together they have two children, Domenico and Claudia.

In Mildura, he was impressed with local produce and wine – but was frustrated by the lack of recognition of the district.

He begun imagining a book that would include his food memories from his native Veneto and the produce of Mildura.

The book took the title of ‘A Gondola on the Murray’ after it was accepted by the ABC.

It was then turned into the television series of the same name.

Stefano’s Restaurant became the recipient of many prestigious awards and continues to attract the support of many patrons.

Stefano and Donata de Piero continue a family tradition in hospitality with the hope of providing variety and interest for residents and the many visitors who come to Mildura.
