The Psyche Bend Historical Reserve Committee and the Mildura / Upland Sister City Association has arranged an itinerary to explore the Chaffey Trail this Sunday October 1.

Chairman Psyche Bend Historical Reserve Committee Cr Mark Eckel said it will coincide with the traditional running of the historical Psyche Bend Pumps during the long weekend of the Mildura Country Musical Festival.

Visitors and locals alike will experience a fully operational “Chaffey” engine which was designed by George Chaffey and which operated from 1890 onward for some 65 years under steam power.

The engine is connected to several large pumps and for those years lifted water from the Murray River for irrigation purposes in the Mildura area.

The pumps ran continuously each year during the irrigation season then intermittently during the winter months allowing for maintenance and repairs.

The site is heritage listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

The Historic Psyche Pumps will be operating on this Sunday from 11am to 4pm.

Bring the family and listen to the stories from the ‘steamies’ and their description from the beginning of our irrigation settlement commencing May 31 1887.
