The total pool for the Coomealla Club annual Melbourne Cup Calcutta was down slightly on the previous year despite a bigger attendance of people on Sunday night.
Whereas in previous years the highest auction bids for a Cup horse have been as much as $2000 and $3000, the big money died not eventuate and a Mildura bookmaker successfully made two bids of $1000 for the horses Almandin, the 2016 winner and for Humidor.
The next highest bids were for Marmelo ($960); Johannes Vermeer ($800); Red Cardinal ($760), Wall of Fire ($740), Big Duke ($680); Thomas Hobson ($620); Tiberian ($520); Max Dynamite ($500) and ReKindling ($500).
The cheapest priced horse was $180 for Bondi Beach, which was the first horse auctioned on the night.
First prize in the Calcutta will be $8910 with $3712,50 for second, $1485 for third and $742.50 for last over the line.
This year’s total pool was $14,850 for 23 horses while last year the total pool was $16,405 for 24 horses auctioned.
