The Mildura Writers Festival has built up a strong reputation over the last two decades.  It is a celebration of food, writing and reading, held over a weekend each July at various Mildura locations.

This year's Writers Festival will run this year from July 19 to 22 and as a prelude to what is set to be another wonderful weekend for attendees; two pre-festival writers' workshops are scheduled for July 7th.

The Workshops are fundamental in helping writers develop and celebrate their own work and are an initiative of the Festival committee as they continue to diversify the events offerings to local writers.  The pre-festival workshops are especially geared to aspiring and emerging local writers who need that extra bit of inspiration from published writers to get their stories told.

On Saturday, July 7, this year’s Writer in Residence, Sian Prior, offers a workshop for beginners about writing in memoir form. On Sunday, July 8, Sian offers a similar workshop, but for emerging writers with some experience at writing. Both of Sian’s workshops will run at MIM (Museum of Innocence), 33 Deakin Avenue, from 1.30 to 5.30 pm.

Writers Workshops will continue during the Festival with an Indigenous Writers workshop with Marie Munkara, courtesy of PEN Melbourne to be held on Thursday, July 19. Marie’s workshop focuses on culturally appropriate use of Indigenous content. Marie’s workshop will run at the Art Vault, from 10.30 to 3.30 pm.

In addition, on Thursday July 19, poet and short story writer Cate Kennedy, courtesy of Writers’ Victoria, offers a workshop on ‘How to kick start your story ideas.’ Cate’s workshop will run at MIM, from 11.30 to 5.30.

Tickets for all writers' workshops can be accessed via the Mildura Writers Festival website (
